Day After Day

There are several different kinds of days. There are days that go by without incident and quickly pass into oblivion never to be remembered again. There are days that are memorable, but as time passes so do the memories, crowded out by new ones. Then there are days that are forever burned into your memory. Whether good or bad, something so big happened that you will always remember it. Weddings, birthdays, and funerals are often the most memorable; so too are days where we accomplish something.

I recently saw a promotional poster for Camp that said this “Camp – because kids don’t remember their best day of TV”.  How true that is!  That statement challenges me to be a more focused parent to my children and not take the easy road of the electronic babysitter.  There are so many ways for young people to spend their time that don’t involve getting up and doing anything.  TV, smart phones, video games, tablets, and computers can all be a necessary and fun part of life, but how much time can be wasted on these devices?  Worse, how much time can be spent on these devices doing things that displease God?

That’s the wonderful thing about camping and retreating; it gets us away from our routine and away to beautiful places where we can hear the still small voice of the Holy Spirit.  Scripture says: “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed” Luke 5:16.  We should practice this type “withdrawal” daily. The very act of finding a quiet place is a form of worship that tells God “I want to be with ONLY YOU for the next few moments”.

Each day is a gift that has great value.  Spend it wisely.  Choose for yourself what kind of day it will be.
