Death and Taxes

As I drove in to the camp office early the other morning I was greeted with this beautiful view of steam rising off of the surface of the lake.  The pragmatist in me knows that the steam is created because the warmer weather has heated the water but temperatures the previous night dipped into the forties causing the water to be warmer than the air: thus the steam.  The nature lover in me was compelled to stop and take a picture, because I know that this specific picture will be gone in a short moment.

I’ve been reminded several times this year about the brevity of life; the fact is that there are no guarantees that we will see tomorrow.  James states it very clearly in chapter four; verses 13-15.

” Now listen, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money. Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”

Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying “but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”  While we often make light of the certainty of death, I’m not sure we always live our lives as if we actually believe death is certain.

WHAT IF I knew that tomorrow would be my last chance to apologize, make amends, uplift, or share Jesus with someone I loved?  WHAT IF I knew that this was going to be my last year, summer, or week on this earth?  Would I do anything different?  Would I live with a more determined purpose?  Would I do my best to assure that those that I loved would meet me in heaven?  Would my priorities change?  Would I have more of a sense of urgency?    WHAT IF I took the advice of James and started each day by saying “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that”, while actually seeking His will?

Summer at Awanita Valley officially starts in a week.  WHAT IF we knew this was going to be the last summer before we meet Jesus?  Pray for our staff this summer as we seek the Lord's leading and consider the WHAT IF’s.
